Websites with Helpful Resources

Updated: Nov 7, 2019

As proud of our site as we are, we can't cover everything. That is why we have created this comprehensive list of other resources that are beneficial to animal rescues. Please contact us if you'd like to add your website to the list or know of a fantastic resource we have missed!

Animal Rescue Related Information

The Humane Society of the United States has a section of their website dedicated to tools and resources for rescues. This includes available grants, contacts to local humane society directors, TNR guides, kitten nursery information, repealing breed specific legislation, etc.

The Best Friends organization devotes a large portion of their website with free information and resources for animal rescues. Their articles and guides include how to handle wild animals that are orphaned or injured, training rescue dogs, recruiting volunteers, writing animal bios, kitten foster manual, etc.

Neighborhood Cats has a section on their site for resources which references a variety of other websites as well as shares their own. Their resources include TNR handbooks, cat colony information, outreach tool kit, case studies, how-to videos on trapping cats, etc.

Maddie's Fund- the University Portion, has courses for continuing education credits as well as training programs tailored to the shelter personnel and community volunteers. Maddie's Fund also provides the Million Cat Challenge which provides a resource center. This center has strategies to provide proven practices that can make differences in every shelter.

NYC Feral Cat Initiative has information on TNR and Cat Colony care on their website as well as an online training course for the same subjects.

The National Kitten Coalition has a free kitten nursery manual as well as a list of helpful resources they recommend.

Shelter Medicine of University of Wisconsin-Madison has many articles and resources for the care of feral and shelter pets. These resources include a guide to raising underage kittens, best way to clean while minimizing stress, reducing parvo when transferring puppies, cat + dog reclaim cost calculator, etc. Many topics are related to the health of animals including the medicine and procedures needed.

Social Media for Animals has great information on how to post job descriptions as a rescue, social media policies for rescues, speakers for hire for conferences with their bios, how to take a great live video, etc.

Alley Cat Allies has an extensive amount of articles on cats focusing on the feral cat community. The website includes information on legislation and public education how-to's.

The Kitten Lady is a great website for everything kittens. She has video tutorials, articles, and educational events you can sign up for.

Social Media and Event Planning Websites

As we have stated before, Canva is an incredible tool for all media. The website is free and simple. It allows you to choose which media format you are making, i.e. Instagram story, flier, thank you card, etc, and then gives you templates to use or allows you to make your own. Its super easy to create something beautiful, download it, and post it in under 20 minutes! Learn more in our article devoted to Canva.

Canva has plenty of free stock photos for use but occasionally it won't be sufficient. When you need other sites to try, there's Unsplash and Pexels. Both sites offer, crisp, high res, high design quality images that are free to download.

If you want to take your social media up a notch, there's Sprout Social and Hoot Suite. These services are not free but help people and companies get their social media strategies in order and organized.

Popular Users for Inspiration

Sometimes, all you need is a little inspiration. A great way to get ideas and feel refreshed is to follow and look through your favorite social media stars. Look through their posts and try to understand why the posts are successful. Are they funny? Are they high resolution photos? Are they telling a story? Is their feed a cohesive piece of art? Some great and successful social media users that have it going on and the followers to prove it are: Susie Senior Dogs, The San Francisco SPCA, The Dogist, Tuna the Dog, Nala the Cat, Humane Society of Memphis, Stray From The Heart, Hawkesbury Animal Shelter, Rescued Nose Photography, and Badass Brooklyn Rescue
